Indoor Baseball and Softball Practice Plan: Rainy Day and Winter Drills

Rain, snow, and a packed field schedule do not have to cancel practice. A well-run indoor session in a gym, cafeteria, or batting cage can build just as much skill as a day on the field, and sometimes more, because the smaller space forces tight, high-rep work with fewer distractions. This indoor baseball and softball practice plan gives you a complete, timed structure for rainy days, winter workouts, and the off-season, plus a printable PDF to take with you.
The key indoors is the same as outdoors: keep every player active with stations instead of one long line. The difference is that you trade range and live fly balls for controlled reps, footwork, and baseball IQ.
How to Structure an Indoor Practice
Indoor space is limited, so plan for small groups moving through tight stations on a timer. A 60 to 75 minute indoor practice works well with four stations of about 10 minutes each, a warm-up, and a quick team segment to finish.
| Time | Block | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 - 0:10 | Dynamic warm-up | Light movement, band work, and a short partner-catch progression if space allows. |
| 0:10 - 0:50 | Four skill stations | Small groups rotate every 10 minutes through hitting, fielding, throwing, and a baseball IQ station. |
| 0:50 - 1:05 | Team IQ or competition | A situation walkthrough with cones, a hallway baserunning relay, or a hitting competition. |
| 1:05 - 1:10 | Huddle | One focus point for next time and recognition of effort. |

Indoor Station Ideas That Build Real Skills
Hitting Station
Tee work and front toss into a net are the most valuable indoor reps you can get. Players control the ball, so you can fix one mechanical cue at a time. Set up two or three tees against a net and run a short rotation so each hitter gets 15 or more focused swings. Two reliable drills:
- Ball-Hit Front Toss: teaches tracking and hitting the ball out front, ideal in a net or cage.
- 3 Plate Hitting Drill: inside, middle, and outside tees to teach hitting the ball where it is pitched.
Fielding and Footwork Station
You do not need ground balls off a bat to build fielding. Roll firm grounders on a gym floor, which speeds the game up and forces clean glovework. The smooth surface rewards good fundamentals and exposes lazy ones.
- Alligator Hands Grounders: two-hand fielding that travels perfectly indoors.
- Alternating Shorthop Ladder: builds soft hands and quick footwork in a tight space.
Throwing Mechanics Station
Indoors is the perfect place to clean up throwing. Use towel drills, wrist flips, and short partner catch against a wall or net, focusing on grip, a clean arm path, and a balanced finish. The 21-Point Throwing Accuracy game adds friendly competition, and arm-care band work fits here too, especially in the off-season.
Baseball IQ Station
Use the controlled indoor setting to teach the thinking part of the game. Walk through cutoffs and relays with cones, quiz players on where to throw in a given situation, or review the rules that decide close plays. This high-value work often gets skipped on a busy field day. Browse the full baseball and softball drill libraries for more ideas to rotate in each week.
Make Rainy Days Count
Coaches who treat indoor practice as a real session, not a babysitting hour, see steady winter and rainy-season gains. Keep the pace brisk, keep groups small, and pick one or two focus points for the day. When the weather clears, your players come back sharper than the teams that simply canceled.
