Footwork

Footwork refers to how a player positions and moves their feet during fielding and throwing. It's the foundation of all defensive mechanics, without proper footwork, even the best arm and glove won't produce consistent results.

Why Footwork Matters

Good footwork enables:

  • Balance: Stay athletic and ready
  • Positioning: Get in front of balls
  • Throwing accuracy: Feet lead accurate throws
  • Range: Move efficiently to the ball
  • Quick transfers: Smooth field-to-throw transitions

Infield Footwork Fundamentals

Fielding Grounders

  1. Get in front of the ball
  2. Right foot slightly behind left (right-handers)
  3. Field the ball, transfer, "right-left-throw"
  4. Feet always moving toward target

Making Throws

  • Step toward target
  • Plant and throw
  • Follow throw with momentum

Outfield Footwork

Fly Balls

  • First step determines everything
  • Drop step on balls over your head
  • Crow hop before throwing

Ground Balls

  • Charge under control
  • Round the ball to maintain momentum
  • Crow hop toward target

Common Footwork Mistakes

  1. Flat feet: Standing still, not moving
  2. Crossing over: Getting tangled up
  3. Throwing off wrong foot: Leads to errors
  4. Lazy approach: Not getting in front

Coaching Cue

"Feet first, glove second, your feet put you in position to succeed."
