10U Baseball Practice Plan

For most teams, 10U is the second season of kid pitch. Walks, passed balls, and throws that sail still decide more innings than hits do, but the players who were new to it last year are ready for more: catchers who block and throw, pitchers who field their position, and the first real cutoffs.

This free 10U baseball practice plan runs 90 minutes on the 60/46 diamond most leagues use at this age. Download a printable plan below, or open it in the free Practice Planner to swap in the drills your team needs this week.

What to Focus On at 10U

Throws someone can catch

Most 10U errors are throws, not grounders. Keep score during catch so every throw has a target: a ball caught at the chest earns a point, a wild one costs one. Then rep the throw to first from short and third more than anything else.

Catchers who block and recover

Balls in the dirt come every inning at 10U, and runners move up on every one that gets away. Give catchers a station every practice: block it, find it, and get rid of it. Fewer passed balls means shorter innings and fewer runs nobody hit in.

Pitchers are fielders too

A 10U pitcher sees more comebackers than most infielders. Teach the pitcher to field it, square up to first, and make an easy throw. Pitch counts are rules with mandatory rest days, so spread the innings across more than two arms and count every pitch in games.

10U Drills for This Plan

Each drill links to its full write-up in the drill library, with setup, steps, and coaching points.

  • Block, Recover, Throw

Tennis balls in the dirt, then a quick throw. Blocking only helps if the catcher can find the ball and get rid of it.

  • 21-Point Throwing Accuracy

Partner catch with points for chest-high throws, so warm-up catch has a target.

  • Comebacker Drill

The pitcher finishes a pitch, fields a ball hit back to the mound, and throws to first.

  • Ready Aim Bunt

Hitters square around and try to drop the bunt in a cone box down either line.

  • Fly Ball Communication Drill

Two or three outfielders, one ball in the gap, and someone has to call it out loud.

  • Pop Quiz

The whole team catches a target number of pop-ups in a row. One drop and the count starts over.

10U Baseball Practice FAQs

How long should a 10U baseball practice be?

About 90 minutes. Players ages 9 to 10 handle 8 to 10 minute stations well, plus one longer block of live at-bats.

What should a 10U practice focus on?

Accurate throwing, a catcher who can block, pitchers who field their position, and live at-bats with real counts. Walks, passed balls, and throwing errors still decide more 10U games than hitting does.

What size field does 10U baseball use?

Most leagues play 60-foot bases and a 46-foot mound at 10U. Little League uses that diamond for ages 9 to 12. Travel organizations vary, so check yours before you set up practice.

Do pitch counts apply at 10U?

Yes. In Little League and most sanctioned youth leagues, pitch counts are rules, with mandatory rest days set by pitch count and age. Bullpen and warm-up pitches are not in the official count, but they still tire the arm.
