What is a softball scorecard?
A softball scorecard is a single page used to record every play of one game. It includes a batting grid with diamond cells for tracking baserunners, columns for each inning, a pitcher log, inning totals, and DP/FLEX substitution tracking for fastpitch.
Is a softball scorecard different from a baseball scorecard?
The diamond grid and basic notation are identical. Softball scorecards include DP/FLEX substitution tracking (the Designated Player and FLEX roles standard in fastpitch) and pitching stats specific to softball (illegal pitches instead of balks). Use the softball version for ASA, USA Softball, NFHS softball, or USSSA fastpitch leagues.
Does this scorecard work for both fastpitch and slowpitch?
Yes. Fastpitch coaches use 7 innings with DP/FLEX; slowpitch typically plays 7 innings with 10 players (including a short fielder). Our softball scorecard handles both. Ignore the DP/FLEX rows for slowpitch and use the 10th batting row for the extra player.
What DP/FLEX tracking do I need on a softball scorecard?
You need space to mark which player is the DP (designated player, bats only), which is the FLEX (defensive specialist, fields only), and when they substitute in and out. Our softball scorecard has dedicated rows for this.
How do I track illegal pitches on a softball scorecard?
Mark "IP" in the pitcher's column for each illegal pitch. After the game, total them in the pitcher log. Illegal pitches add up fast with developing pitchers. Scoring them tells the pitching coach where mechanics are breaking down.
How many innings does softball play?
Fastpitch plays 7 innings at the standard level. Youth leagues often play 5 or 6. Slowpitch is typically 7 innings. Our 7-inning scorecard covers all standard formats, and the extra-inning columns handle games that go long.
How is a softball scorecard different from a scorebook?
A scorecard is one page for one game. A scorebook is a bound collection of scorecards covering an entire season, usually with roster pages, pitching logs, and season stats summaries. Print individual scorecards if you only score a few games.
Should I use pen or pencil on a scorecard?
Pencil is standard. Scorekeeping involves corrections, and pencil lets you fix them cleanly. Bring two sharpened pencils and an eraser to every game.
Are these scorecards free for league use?
Yes. Print as many copies as you need for personal, team, and league use. Distribute to parents, coaches, and umpires. Commercial resale is not permitted.
