Batting

Tee Work

Batting practice using a stationary tee, allowing hitters to focus purely on swing mechanics without the variable of pitch timing.

Example Usage

Even MLB players do tee work every day, it's the foundation of a good swing.

Tee Work

Tee work is the practice of hitting balls off a stationary batting tee. It's the most fundamental hitting drill, used by players from Little League through the Major Leagues to refine swing mechanics.

Why Tee Work Matters

Tee work allows hitters to:

  • Isolate mechanics: No timing variable
  • Get high repetitions: Quick, efficient practice
  • Feel contact points: Different heights and locations
  • Build muscle memory: Consistent, repeatable swings
  • Self-diagnose issues: See and feel problems clearly

Tee Work Setup

Basic Setup

  • Tee at waist height, center of plate
  • Net or screen 10-15 feet away
  • Full swing with proper mechanics

Location Work

  • Inside: Tee positioned forward, inside
  • Middle: Center of the plate
  • Outside: Tee positioned deeper, outside
  • High/Low: Adjust tee height

Common Tee Work Drills

High/Low Tee

Alternate between chest-high and knee-high to train adjustability.

Three Tee Drill

Set up three tees (inside, middle, outside) and rotate through each.

One-Handed Swings

Build arm strength and hand path with single-arm swings.

Walk-Through Swings

Emphasize weight transfer and rhythm.

Coaching Tips

  • Quality over quantity, focus on each swing
  • Vary tee positions throughout the session
  • Include front toss after tee work for timing
  • Even 10-15 minutes daily builds significant improvement
