What is a softball scorebook?
A softball scorebook is a bound or binder-ring collection of scorecards — one per game — used to record every play of every game across a season. Most scorebooks also have roster pages, pitching log, and season summary stats at the end.
Is a softball scorebook different from a baseball scorebook?
The diamond grid and basic notation are identical. Softball scorebooks include DP/FLEX substitution tracking (the Designated Player and FLEX roles standard in fastpitch) and pitching stats specific to softball (illegal pitches instead of balks). Use the softball version for ASA, USA Softball, NFHS softball, or USSSA fastpitch leagues.
How do I print a full softball scorebook from these templates?
Print 20-25 copies of the 7-inning softball scorecard on 32 lb paper. Three-hole punch and put in a small binder. Add a roster sheet at the front and a blank summary page at the back. That gives you a complete season scorebook for about $5 in materials.
Does the softball scorebook work for both fastpitch and slowpitch?
Yes. Fastpitch coaches use 7 innings with DP/FLEX; slowpitch typically plays 7 innings with 10 players (including a short fielder). Our softball scorecard handles both — ignore the DP/FLEX rows for slowpitch and use the 10th batting row for the extra player.
What DP/FLEX tracking do I need on a softball scorecard?
You need space to mark which player is the DP (designated player — bats only), which is the FLEX (defensive specialist — fields only), and when they substitute in and out. Our softball scorecard has dedicated rows for this.
How do I track illegal pitches in a softball scorebook?
Mark "IP" in the pitcher's column for each illegal pitch. After the game, total them in the pitcher log. Illegal pitches add up fast with developing pitchers — scoring them tells the pitching coach where mechanics are breaking down.
Should I buy a physical softball scorebook or print my own?
Depends on how often you keep score. If you are the official team scorekeeper for every game, a physical book ($15-$30 for a Rawlings or Murray scorebook) is convenient. If you score occasionally or want a custom setup, printing individual sheets and binding them into a binder gives you the same functionality for free.
