How to Use a Softball Scorebook

A scorebook is the official record of your season. Whether you are a first-time scorekeeper or a veteran coach, these steps will help you get the most out of your printable scorebook.

  1. Print your scorebook. Use the generator above to choose your innings and number of games, then print on 32 lb paper or cardstock for durability. Three-hole punch and use a binder, or staple the pages together.
  2. Write the batting order before each game. Both managers exchange lineups before the game. List each batter by uniform number and name in batting order. Write their starting fielding position in the Pos column. Note DP and FLEX designations if your league uses them. This order cannot change during the game except for substitutions.
  3. Record each at-bat result. In the diamond cell for that batter's inning, write the outcome: 1B (single), 2B (double), 3B (triple), HR (home run), BB (walk), K (strikeout), HBP (hit by pitch), FC (fielder's choice), SAC (sacrifice), or SF (sacrifice fly).
  4. Record outs with position numbers. Use fielding position numbers to show how each out was made: 6-3 means groundout shortstop to first base, F8 means flyout to center field, L4 means lineout to second baseman.
  5. Fill in the diamond as runners advance. Each side of the diamond represents a base. Draw along the bottom-right side for first base, top-right for second, top-left for third, and bottom-left when the runner scores. A fully filled diamond means a run scored.
  6. Mark the leadoff batter and total each inning. At the end of each half-inning, draw a line at the next batter to show who leads off next time. Fill in the R/H/E/LOB rows at the bottom of the scorecard.
  7. Complete the game totals. After the game, fill in each batter's AB, R, H, and RBI columns. Finalize the pitcher log with IP, H, R, ER, BB, and SO. Mark the winning pitcher (W), losing pitcher (L), and any saves (S).

Softball Scorebook vs Scorecard

A scorecard is a single sheet for recording one game. It has a batting lineup grid, pitcher log, and inning totals for one matchup. A scorebook is a collection of scorecards bundled together for an entire season, along with a cover page, team roster, and scoring reference.

Our generator builds a full scorebook. If you only need a single-game scorecard, you can set the number of games to 1, or visit our free softball scorecards page for individual scorecard templates in different formats.

Softball Scorebook FAQ

What is a softball scorebook?

A softball scorebook is a bound or printed collection of scorecards that covers an entire season. It includes a team roster page with DP/FLEX designations, individual game scorecards with diamond grids for tracking at-bats, pitcher logs, and a scoring reference with softball-specific notation. Our free generator lets you build a custom scorebook instantly: choose your innings per game, set the number of games, and print or save as PDF.

How do I use the scorebook generator?

Choose your innings per game (3 for coach pitch, 6 for rec, 7 for standard fastpitch or slowpitch), enter how many games you need, and click Preview or Print. Preview opens your scorebook in a new tab so you can review it. Print / Save as PDF opens it and triggers your browser print dialog so you can send it to a printer or save a PDF file.

Does the scorebook work for both fastpitch and slowpitch?

Yes. Fastpitch coaches use the DP/FLEX rows and 9-player lineup. Slowpitch coaches use the 10th batting row for the short fielder and ignore the DP/FLEX rows. The same scorebook handles both.

What DP/FLEX tracking is included?

The scoring reference page includes DP (Designated Player) and FLEX (defensive specialist) notation. The scorecards include substitution rows for tracking when DP and FLEX players enter or leave the game.

How many games should I include?

A typical rec or travel season runs 10 to 15 games, while tournament teams may play 20 or more. Enter any number from 1 to 25. If you are not sure, 12 to 15 covers most youth seasons with a few extras for makeup games.

What pages are included in the scorebook?

Every scorebook includes a branded cover page with your team name, a team roster page with uniform numbers, positions, DP/FLEX designations, and parent contact info, a scoring reference page with all standard symbols including softball-specific notation, plus your chosen number of game scorecards. Each scorecard has a diamond-grid batting lineup, pitcher log with IP, H, R, ER, BB, K columns, and inning-by-inning run totals.

Should I print this or buy a bound scorebook?

Our printable scorebook is free and customizable. Print it on heavier paper and use a binder clip for durability. If you prefer a pre-bound book, we recommend the scorebooks listed further down this page.

Can I use this for baseball?

We have a separate baseball scorebook generator without the softball-specific DP/FLEX notation. Check the baseball scorebook page for that version.
