Fielding Drill: Alternating Shorthop Ladder (Baseball & Softball)
Progressive fielding drill using alternating short hop bounces to develop quick hands, proper footwork, and confidence handling difficult hops in rapid succession.
Instructions
Set up cone markers for fielding positions. Partner creates alternating short hop bounces from different angles. Fielder moves laterally between positions, fielding each short hop cleanly. Progress from slow to game speed.
Coaching Points
- Keep glove low and out front
- Move feet to get body behind ball
- Use soft hands to absorb bounce
- Stay in athletic position throughout
- Focus on clean fielding over speed initially
- Practice both forehand and backhand sides
