Infield Drill: Alligator Hands Grounders (Baseball & Softball)

Foundational ground-ball drill teaching two-hand “alligator” secure and centered funnel.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Setup:
  2. - Partners 10-15 feet apart facing each other
  3. - Mark lanes with cones if working with multiple pairs
  4. - Use soft or practice baseballs for safety with beginners
  5. 1. Teach the Alligator Concept
  6. - Glove hand out front, palm up (bottom jaw)
  7. - Throwing hand above glove, palm down (top jaw)
  8. - When ball enters, hands clamp together like alligator mouth
  9. - This prevents ball from popping out
  10. 2. Athletic Stance and Ready Position
  11. - Feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent
  12. - Weight on balls of feet, not heels
  13. - Glove should be out front, not pulled back to body
  14. - Eyes behind the ball - watch it all the way in
  15. 3. Center Feeds (8-10 reps)
  16. - Partner rolls slow grounders directly at player
  17. - Player fields with alligator hands at centerline of body
  18. - Secure ball to chest/centerline before throwing
  19. - Step and throw to partner's chest
  20. 4. Forehand Feeds (5-8 reps)
  21. - Partner rolls grounders to glove-hand side
  22. - Player shuffles to get centered behind ball
  23. - Still field at centerline with proper technique
  24. - Focus on footwork to get body in position
  25. 5. Backhand Feeds (5-8 reps)
  26. - Partner rolls grounders to throwing-hand side
  27. - Player moves feet to get centered
  28. - Same alligator technique applies
  29. - Emphasize moving feet, not reaching

Coaching Points

  • Glove out front always - do not pull back to body
  • Eyes behind the ball - watch it into the glove
  • Secure to centerline before making throw
  • Throw through big target - partner chest
  • Move feet to center ball - do not just reach
  • Two hands on every ground ball at this age
