Outfield Drill: Fly Ball Communication Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Teaches outfielders to call for fly balls loudly and clearly to prevent collisions. Communication is the key to safety in the gaps.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Position two or three outfielders in a line.
  2. Coach hits or throws fly balls into the gap between fielders.
  3. Players must call "I got it!" or "Ball!" loudly and repeatedly until the catch is made.
  4. The coach can yell out a number that corresponds to each player, or you can make one player the center fielder who will have priority if they call it.
  5. Non-catching players should echo "You! You! You!" or not say anything at all.
  6. Start with tennis balls and underhand tosses for younger players, then progress to fungo hits.

Coaching Points

  • Call for the ball early and loud - do not be shy
  • Keep calling until the catch is made
  • If you do not call it, back off and let your teammate take it
  • Center fielder has priority over corner outfielders
  • Never assume - communicate on every fly ball
