14U Baseball Practice Plan

ages 13 to 142 to 2.5 hours90 ft bases, 60 ft 6 in moundFree printable PDF

14U plays on the full-size field: 90-foot bases and a mound 60 feet 6 inches from the plate. Everything players learned about timing on a 60-foot diamond has to be relearned, from how far the throw across the infield is to how much time a runner gives you. In Junior League and travel ball, runners take real leads, so holding runners and the throw to second become part of every practice.

It is also a notorious year for kids leaving the game, so a 14U practice has to build skill and still be worth showing up for. Download a printable plan for ages 13 and up below, or build your own version in the free Practice Planner.

What to Focus On at 14U

Relearn the big field

Every throw is longer, infielders play deeper, and the outfield gets bigger. Build arm strength with a long toss progression, and run relays until the cutoff man gets to the right spot on his own.

Holding runners and leads

With leads legal, pitchers work from the stretch and hold runners, first basemen hold and then get off the bag, and catchers need quick footwork on the throw to second. Runners practice their lead and first step on the same day.

Keep them in the game

14U is a notorious drop-off year. Give every player a real role, keep most of practice at game speed, and end on something competitive so practice is still fun.

14U Drills for This Plan

Each drill links to its full write-up in the drill library, with setup, steps, and coaching points.

  • Long Toss

Builds the arm strength the longer throws need. Keep max-distance throws to a handful.

  • 3-Man Relay

Quick transfers and accurate throws through the middle man, the core of every relay on a 90-foot field.

  • 1st Base Off Bag

The first baseman holds a runner, then shuffles off the bag into fielding position. Only matters once leads are legal.

  • Leads and Breaks

The lead, the read on the pitcher, the first step on a steal, and getting back on a pickoff.

  • Flamingo Drill

Catcher throwing footwork: gain ground toward second without jumping forward.

  • Situational Hitting

Batting practice where the coach calls the situation and the hitter has a job to do.

14U Baseball Practice FAQs

How long should a 14U baseball practice be?

2 to 2.5 hours. Players ages 13 to 14 can handle long blocks of position work and game-speed reps, with a real long toss warm-up at the start.

What size field does 14U baseball play on?

The full-size field: 90-foot bases and a mound 60 feet 6 inches from the plate, the same distances as Junior League, Senior League, and high school. If your league uses a different field, practice at the distances you will play.

Can runners lead off at 14U?

Yes in Junior League, travel ball, and high school, which is why holding runners and pickoffs become practice items. Younger Little League divisions and most rec baseball keep runners on the base until the pitch reaches the batter, so leads are new for many 13 and 14 year olds.

Can a 14U pitcher come back to the mound after being removed?

In Junior League, yes, once per game, if he stayed in the game at another position. That is different from Little League Majors and below, where a pitcher removed from the mound cannot pitch again that game.
