Hitting Drill: Situational Hitting (Baseball & Softball)
Batting practice with game situations. Coach calls out scenarios and batters try to execute the appropriate approach.
How to Run This Drill
- Set up batting practice with baserunners on the bases.
- Before each pitch, coach calls out the game situation the batter must execute.
- Situation 1: Runner on second, hit to the right side to advance the runner.
- Situation 2: Runner on third with less than 2 outs, hit a fly ball to score the runner.
- Situation 3: Hit and run with runner on first, protect the runner and put the ball in play.
- Situation 4: Two strikes, choke up and put the ball in play.
- Award points for successful execution of each situation.
Coaching Points
- Think before you swing - know the situation
- Right side = open up slightly to pull the ball
- Fly ball situation = look for a pitch to lift
- Hit and run = protect the runner, make contact
- Two strikes = shorten up and battle
