Around the Horn

Around the horn is the informal name for the sequence where infielders throw the ball around all the bases after a strikeout or during warmup. The traditional path is catcher to third base, third to second, second to first, then back to the pitcher (or wherever the sequence ends based on the coach's preference).

When It Happens

After a strikeout with no runners on base: The catcher throws to third, the third baseman to second, the second baseman to first. First throws back to the pitcher. Some teams continue back the other direction or include the shortstop in the sequence. This is a quick, rhythmic routine that keeps infielders engaged between pitches.

As a warmup drill before innings: Coaches will often have the infielders go around the horn before the first pitch of an inning to get arms loose and focus the group.

The Purpose

Around the horn serves several practical functions:

• Keeps infielders mentally engaged between pitches during slow moments
• Maintains arm warmth and throwing readiness throughout the game
• Builds routine: the predictable sequence creates shared rhythm in the infield
• Communication practice: even in this simple exchange, players are making eye contact and throwing with purpose

Teaching It

For youth teams, running a clean around the horn is a legitimate practice goal. Young infielders learning to catch, transfer, and throw quickly under low pressure is valuable. The sequence teaches:

• Catcher footwork and throwing mechanics under no stress
• Corner infielders catching and quickly releasing to a moving target
• Middle infielders catching at second base and throwing across to first

A smooth, crisp around the horn after a strikeout is a small moment that builds team confidence and infield identity.
