Cutoff Man
The cutoff man (or relay man) is an infielder who positions between an outfielder and the target base to receive and redirect throws. This creates two shorter, more accurate throws instead of one long one.
Why Use a Cutoff
- Two short throws > one long throw: More accurate
- Faster ball movement: Ball travels on a line, not an arc
- Flexibility: Can redirect based on runner movement
- Backup: Prevents overthrows from going into stands
Typical Cutoff Responsibilities
Shortstop
- Cutoff for throws to third base
