For Hitters

Swing (Aggressive Approach)

• Look for your pitch
• Jump on a hittable fastball

Take (Patient Approach)

• See the pitcher's stuff
• Work the count
• Make pitcher throw more pitches
• Wait for better opportunity

For Pitchers

Throw a Strike

• Get ahead in the count
• Establish the zone
• Force hitter to react
• Typically a fastball

Waste/Setup Pitch

• See if hitter will chase
• Set up a sequence
• Not as common on first pitch

First Pitch Statistics

• Hitters who swing at the first pitch often have higher batting averages on that pitch
• Getting ahead 0-1 dramatically favors the pitcher
• First-pitch strikes correlate with lower ERAs
