Pitch Count
The total number of pitches thrown by a pitcher in a game. Youth leagues set per-game limits by age to protect developing arms, following these limits is one of the most important things a youth coach can do.

Pitch Count
Pitch count is the running total of pitches thrown by a pitcher in a game or outing. It is tracked by coaches, scorekeepers, and at higher levels by official scorers and broadcast systems. At the youth level, pitch count is the primary tool used to protect young pitchers from overuse injuries.
Why It Matters
A developing arm, particularly in players under 18, is vulnerable to overuse injuries in ways that adult arms are not. Growth plates are still open. Tendons and ligaments are still maturing. The repetitive stress of throwing a baseball, especially with the stress of game-intensity effort, accumulates. Throwing too many pitches in a single outing, or too many days in a row without rest, is one of the leading causes of youth arm injuries including UCL damage, Little Leaguer's elbow, and rotator cuff problems.
Pitch count limits exist because arm injuries in youth players can be permanent. There is no reason to put a kid's arm at risk in a rec league game.
Youth League Pitch Count Guidelines
Most organized youth leagues follow guidelines based on Little League Baseball's published limits (or equivalent):

Required rest days are also mandated based on pitches thrown. A pitcher who throws 66+ pitches in a day typically requires multiple days of rest before pitching again.
Beyond Pitch Count
Pitch count is a proxy for workload, not a perfect system. Other factors also affect arm stress:
- Pitch type: breaking balls and cutters stress the arm differently than fastballs
- Effort level: max-effort pitches stress the arm more than controlled fastballs
- Mechanics: poor mechanics multiply stress on specific structures
- Warm-up: a pitcher who does not warm up properly before pitching is at greater risk regardless of pitch count
The best coaches track pitch count as a floor minimum, "we will never exceed this", and also watch the pitcher for signs of fatigue (velocity loss, command breakdown, labored mechanics) that should trigger an early exit even within the count limit.
