Fielding

Short Hop

A ground ball that bounces just in front of a fielder, requiring quick reflexes to catch it immediately after the hop.

Example Usage

The shortstop made a great play on the short hop to get the runner at first.

Short Hop

A short hop is a ground ball that bounces just inches in front of a fielder, requiring them to catch the ball immediately after it hits the ground. This is one of the most challenging plays in baseball and softball because of the quick reaction time required.

Why Short Hops Are Difficult

Short hops are tricky because:

  • The ball is still rising when caught
  • Very little time to react
  • Requires soft hands and quick reflexes
  • The fielder must adjust their glove angle rapidly

The "Good" Hop

Interestingly, experienced fielders often prefer a short hop over an "in-between hop" (a ball that bounces at waist height). A short hop is predictable, you know exactly where the ball will be. An in-between hop can surprise you.

How to Field a Short Hop

  1. Stay low - Keep your glove on the ground
  2. Soft hands - Let the ball come to you
  3. Watch it in - Keep your eyes on the ball all the way into your glove
  4. Work through the ball - Don't stab at it; let it travel into your glove

Famous Short Hop Plays

Many highlight-reel plays involve fielders making incredible short-hop catches to save runs or turn double plays. First basemen and middle infielders face short hops regularly and must master this skill.
