Throwing Drill: Towel Throwing Drill (Baseball & Softball)
A corrective drill using a towel to help players develop proper throwing mechanics. This drill is especially useful for players who short-arm the ball or have an improper release point.
Instructions
Each player needs a towel (about 12-18 inches long). Tape one end of the towel to create weight and simulate a ball. Players pair up and stand about 20-30 feet apart. Using normal throwing mechanics, players throw the towel to their partner, focusing on a full arm extension and proper release point. The weighted end of the towel should fly toward the target. Players should go through their complete throwing motion, including proper footwork and follow-through.
Coaching Points
- Watch for full arm extension - the drill prevents short-arming
- Make sure players follow through completely with their throwing motion
- Check that players are using proper footwork and body rotation
