Outfield Drill: Kneeled It (Softball)

Outfielders learn to field grounders by dropping their throwing-side knee to the ground and sweeping the ball into their glove.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Line players up in the outfield, everyone has a glove
  2. Coach stands about 15 feet away with bat and ball
  3. Hit a ground ball to the first player in line
  4. Player fields by dropping throwing-side knee to ground
  5. Sweep ball into glove with other hand
  6. Stand up and throw ball back in one fluid motion
  7. Move to end of line, next player up

Coaching Points

  • This technique keeps the ball in front of you
  • Balls don't always take clean hops on outfield grass
  • Good for keeping base runners stuck at first
