Infield Drill: Three Cone Fundamental Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Three cones mark the pre-pitch step, the fielding breakdown, and the footwork to first base. The fielder works around each cone in sequence on one ground ball.

How to Run This Drill
- Set three cones in a line running toward where the ball will be
- Have the fielder align to the back cone
- Take a good pre-pitch step as the pitch is delivered
- Work around the second cone with short, quick steps to build an angle
- Field the ball off the third cone in a good fielding position
- Use your momentum and footwork to gain ground toward first base
- Align your feet to first by placing your right foot to your left foot, then your left foot to your target
Coaching Points
- Short quick steps around the second cone are what build the angle
- The three cones mark the three points to stress: pre-pitch step, breakdown, footwork to first
- Field through the baseball rather than waiting on it
- Aligning the feet to first base is what makes the throw accurate
