Hitting Drill: Bunting Fundamentals (Baseball & Softball)

Essential bunting technique focusing on proper foot pivot, bat angle, and ball placement. Learn to bunt away from the pitcher using cone targets.

How to Run This Drill

Set up two cones down the first base line - one about 3 feet inside the baseline, the other 8-10 feet inside toward the mound. Repeat on the third base line.
Coach throws from a shortened distance behind a screen.
The goal is to bunt the ball between the cones - making the pitcher come off the mound to field it.
Key technique: pivot both feet instead of squaring up completely. Keep the bat at the top of the strike zone with the barrel above your hands.
Bend your knees to adjust for lower pitches. Leave pitches above your hands alone - those are balls.
Give with the pitch to deaden the ball and use the bottom hand to angle the bat toward the target.

Coaching Points

Pivot both feet - do not square up completely
Barrel above hands, start at top of strike zone
If popping up, barrel is below hands at contact
If bunting back to pitcher, not angling the bat with bottom hand
If bunting foul, bat is not out in front of home plate
