How to Run This Drill

  1. One group at each base, with one player at the base to bunt, and one player towards the mound to toss balls to be bunted
  2. Batters should wear helmets and bunt toward the infield, using each base as home plate
  3. Players not bunting or tossing for bunts should shag bunted balls
  4. Each player should execute 5-8 bunts to first, third, and drag
  5. Players should rotate from shag to pitcher to bunter
  6. Repeat rotation as time allows

Coaching Points

  • Square early on sacrifice bunts
  • Catch the ball with the bat - don't jab
  • Keep bat level at eye level
  • Use knees to adjust to pitch height as opposed to dropping the barrel of the bat or your arms/hands
  • Bunt toward target area - 1st base line, 3rd base line, or drag
  • Stay on top of the ball
  • Give with the bat on contact
  • Rotate: shagger → tosser → bunter
