Infield Drill: Rolled Ground Ball Fundamentals (Baseball & Softball)
Controlled ground ball drill for all ages. Roll balls directly into gloves while players hold proper fielding position - builds fundamentals and leg strength.
How to Run This Drill
- Place cones in a square. Players start behind two cones. Players assume ground ball position: wide base, butt down, hands out front.
- Coach kneels about 10 feet away and rolls balls directly into player gloves.
- , the ball is rolled through the middle cones, they'll field the ball and then plant their feet so that they are now on the left side of the square with lead foot in front of the top left corner from where they started.
- Players should quickly pop to a throwing motion (no throw). Player that fielded the ball will then go to the back of the line. This should be a rapid fire drill.
- Start with balls rolled directly into the glove, then vary placement slightly.
- As players improve, move back and roll harder.
- Ball must be caught out in front so eyes can follow it into the glove.
- Focus is on proper fundamentals and catching the ball cleanly without worrying about the throw
Coaching Points
- If ball jumps out of glove, check glove position and angle
- Glove should be out front with wrist relaxed, fingers pointing down
- If struggling, have them scrape dirt forward with their glove between legs
- A relaxed wrist lets you see bad hops early and adjust
- This is meant to be a rapid fire drill to give infielders as many reps as possible
