Infield Drill: Alligator Traps (Baseball & Softball)
Ground ball drill teaching proper two-hand fielding technique. Players receive rollers and must catch with both hands like an alligator eating its dinner.
How to Run This Drill
- Line up your team and stand 10 feet away. The first player in line gets into a set stance with knees bent and hips low.
- Roll a ground ball to the first fielder. When the ball arrives, they must properly receive it with both hands like an alligator eating its dinner, then throw it back to you.
- Roll three grounders to every player before they move to the back of the line.
- Ask players to keep track of how many grounders they successfully field each turn, then challenge them to catch even more next time.
Coaching Points
- Keep eyes on the ball all the way into the glove
- Use both hands - field like an alligator snapping down
- Stay low with knees bent and hips down
- Challenge players to beat their previous score
