Infield Drill: Short Fungos (Baseball & Softball)

Standard infield practice hitting ground balls to all positions. Adapt difficulty to player skill level and field conditions.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Before starting, ensure players understand basic ground ball fundamentals. Check field conditions.
  2. With one coach: hit ground balls to each infield position in rotation. Start with shortstop, then second, first, third.
  3. With two coaches: one hits to third base and shortstop from the first base side, other hits to second and first from the third base side.
  4. Start with players just lobbing balls back or placing in a bucket. Progress to throwing to first base once warmed up.
  5. Adapt the speed and difficulty of ground balls to each player's skill level. Players getting beaten up with bad hops are not improving.
  6. Rotate so each position gets live reps throwing to first base before the drill ends.

Coaching Points

  • Adapt difficulty to player skill level
  • Bad field conditions = take it easy on players
  • Players getting beaten up are not getting better
  • Progress from lobbing back to throwing to first
  • Each position should get live throwing reps
