Outfield Drill: Outfield Fungos (Baseball & Softball)
Standard outfield practice with fly balls to all positions. Include throws to cutoff men and bases.
How to Run This Drill
- Position outfielders in left, center, and right field. Place a cutoff man between the outfield and infield.
- Coach hits fly balls to each outfielder in rotation, varying the types of hits.
- Mix routine fly balls with balls over the head, line drives, balls in the gaps, and balls requiring running catches.
- After catching, outfielder throws to the cutoff man or a designated base.
- Cutoff man relays to the appropriate base depending on the game situation called out.
- Rotate positions after each round so players get experience in all three outfield spots.
Coaching Points
- Vary the types of hits - dont just hit routine flies
- Call the situation before each fly ball
- Work on proper throwing to cutoffs
- Rotate through all three outfield positions
- Include line drives and balls over the head
