Infield Drill: Momentum Drill (Cone Rounding) (Baseball & Softball)

Uses three cones to teach infielders how to round a ground ball instead of charging straight at it and stopping dead. Builds momentum toward the throwing target for stronger, more accurate throws.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Set up three cones in a curved path between your fielding position and where the ball will be
  2. Get into your pre-pitch ready position, hop or right-left ready stance
  3. As the ground ball is hit (or placed), round the ball by going around the cones instead of charging straight at it
  4. Field the ball with proper right-left footwork as you come around the cones
  5. Momentum should be carrying you toward first base as you field
  6. Make a throw (or simulate one) with the energy going toward your target
  7. Have a partner roll ground balls for live reps, or place the ball and work the footwork solo

Coaching Points

  • Never run straight at a ground ball and stop dead — you lose all throwing energy
  • The cones teach you to take a curved path so momentum carries toward first base
  • Right-left catch, right-left throw — same footwork pattern as the Tap Tap drill
  • Great drill to pair with a partner rolling ground balls
