Infield Drill: Lazy Grounders (Baseball & Softball)
Players learn to read and field grounders while on their knees. Develops proper glove positioning and backhand technique without using legs.
How to Run This Drill
- Divide your team into groups of five. Stand 15 feet away from the first player in line.
- All five players get down on both knees without resting on their heels. They place the fingertips of their gloves on the ground.
- Roll a grounder to each player one at a time. Once they field it, players must throw the ball back to you all without standing up or fully sitting down.
- Work your way down the line, then make your way back, this time rolling backhanded grounders.
- Give players a point every time they cleanly field the ball, then challenge them to beat their score in the next round.
Coaching Points
- Place glove fingertips on the ground before the ball arrives
- Field with both hands - use alligator technique for forehand catches
- Focus on presenting an open glove to where the ball is coming from
