Catching Drill: Clap Drill (Baseball & Softball)
A reaction and footwork drill for catchers. A partner claps, and the catcher turns from square to a closed throwing position and back, building the quick, accurate turn used on a throw to second.

How to Run This Drill
- Pair the catcher with a partner, parent or coach who will clap as the timing cue
- Catcher sets up in an athletic position facing the partner, shoulders and feet square
- On the first clap, turn into a closed throwing position, as if throwing a runner out at second base
- On the next clap, turn back to square facing the partner
- Keep turning on every clap for a set of 10 to 15
- Working alone, turn to music or a count in your head instead of a clap
Coaching Points
- Close off the shoulders and feet so they aim directly at the target
- Do not over-turn into a fully closed position that makes the throw hard
- Do not under-turn and end up throwing across your body
- When you turn back, land square, not open or closed
