How to Run This Drill

  1. Catcher sets up in proper receiving position behind the plate - knees bent, glove presented, body balanced.
  2. Coach kneels about 15-20 feet away and throws balls into the dirt to the catcher's left and right sides.
  3. For balls to the left: lead with the left foot, follow with the right, and angle the body to deflect the ball back toward the field.
  4. For balls to the right: lead with the right foot, follow with the left, and angle the body appropriately.
  5. Focus on getting the body in front of the ball, not just reaching with the glove. Chest stays down and glove fills the gap between the legs.
  6. After each block, recover quickly to a ready position. Repeat 10-15 blocks to each side.
