Infield Drill: Momentum Drill (Cone Rounding) (Baseball & Softball)
Uses three cones to teach infielders how to round a ground ball instead of charging straight at it and stopping dead. Builds momentum toward the throwing target for stronger, more accurate throws.

How to Run This Drill
- Set up three cones in a curved path between your fielding position and where the ball will be
- Get into your pre-pitch ready position, hop or right-left ready stance
- As the ground ball is hit (or placed), round the ball by going around the cones instead of charging straight at it
- Field the ball with proper right-left footwork as you come around the cones
- Momentum should be carrying you toward first base as you field
- Make a throw (or simulate one) with the energy going toward your target
- Have a partner roll ground balls for live reps, or place the ball and work the footwork solo
Coaching Points
- Never run straight at a ground ball and stop dead — you lose all throwing energy
- The cones teach you to take a curved path so momentum carries toward first base
- Right-left catch, right-left throw — same footwork pattern as the Tap Tap drill
- Great drill to pair with a partner rolling ground balls
