Infield Drill: Backhand Follow Through Throwing Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Teaches infielders to stop their momentum after backhanding a ball and redirect back toward first base for a strong, accurate throw.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Set up 6-10 cones in a ladder format about 5 feet apart. Player starts in ready position to the left of the first cone on the left hand side of the ladder.
  2. You can either place the ball on the back (right hand side) cones or roll the ball there.
  3. Player will field the ball using proper backhand technique, stops their momentum away from the target.
  4. Player shuffles back toward the cone on the left hand side, gaining momentum toward first base.
  5. Player makes a strong, balanced throw and follows through past the second cone.
  6. Rotate through the line, emphasizing the stop-and-redirect footwork.

Coaching Points

  • You must stop the momentum going away from first base
  • Then shuffle back toward the target before throwing
  • This concept is difficult for young players - drill it repeatedly
  • Never throw off-balance or falling away from the target
  • Plant and drive toward first - let your body help your arm
