Infield Drill: Backhand Follow Through Throwing Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Teaches infielders to stop their momentum after backhanding a ball and redirect back toward first base for a strong, accurate throw.
How to Run This Drill
- Set up 6-10 cones in a ladder format about 5 feet apart. Player starts in ready position to the left of the first cone on the left hand side of the ladder.
- You can either place the ball on the back (right hand side) cones or roll the ball there.
- Player will field the ball using proper backhand technique, stops their momentum away from the target.
- Player shuffles back toward the cone on the left hand side, gaining momentum toward first base.
- Player makes a strong, balanced throw and follows through past the second cone.
- Rotate through the line, emphasizing the stop-and-redirect footwork.
Coaching Points
- You must stop the momentum going away from first base
- Then shuffle back toward the target before throwing
- This concept is difficult for young players - drill it repeatedly
- Never throw off-balance or falling away from the target
- Plant and drive toward first - let your body help your arm
