Infield Drill: Ground Ball Shuffle (Baseball & Softball)
Partner drill teaching proper lateral movement to field ground balls. Players must shuffle without crossing their feet to get in front of the ball.
How to Run This Drill
- Divide your team into pairs standing about 15 feet apart. Every pair gets a ball.
- The player with the ball rolls a grounder to one side of their partner, who must get in front of the ball by side shuffling without crossing their feet.
- Once they field it, they throw it back to their partner.
- Swap roles after five grounders so everyone gets a chance to field.
- Challenge players to field as many balls as they can with perfect form, then see if they can do it even better next time.
Coaching Points
- Shuffle without crossing your feet
- Get in front of the ball - dont backhand unnecessarily
- Start in a low athletic ready position
- Explode in either direction from ready stance
