Hitting Drill: 3 Tee Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Three tees set outside, middle, and inside teach a hitter how the swing changes with pitch location: the hips turn a little farther on each tee as the pitch moves inside, while the swing keeps driving through the ball.

How to Run This Drill

  1. SETUP: Set three tees across the plate, one on the outer half, one down the middle, one on the inner half, at slightly different heights
  2. Challenge setting: raise the middle tee a little higher than the other two, so a hitter who loses posture and comes around the outside pitch crashes into it
  3. Put a ball on all three tees. The hitter takes a normal stance at the plate
  4. Start with the outside pitch: load back, keep the head back, and rotate through the ball rather than around it. The hips stop short of a full turn
  5. Move to the middle pitch with the same swing. The hips rotate a little farther than they did on the outside pitch
  6. Finish with the inside pitch. The hips rotate the farthest of the three
  7. Reset all three balls and repeat the outside, middle, inside sequence

Coaching Points

  • The hips turn farther as the pitch moves from outside to inside, and stop sooner on the outside pitch
  • Keep the direction of the swing through the ball. Over-rotating away from it is the common mistake, for young hitters and high school hitters alike
  • Hold posture on the outside pitch. Coming around it is exactly what the raised middle tee catches
  • The hips stopping is what lets the upper body and the barrel drive through the ball
