Hitting Drill: Line Drive Derby (Baseball & Softball)
Paired tee work in the cage scored on line drives only. A feeder resets the ball and counts while the hitter works against the clock, then they swap.
How to Run This Drill
- Set two tees about ten feet apart in the cage
- Pair the team up and give each pair a hitter and a feeder, with two pairs working at once
- Both players in the cage wear helmets
- Feeders kneel beside a bucket of balls and hitters take their stance facing away from each other
- On the call, the feeder sets a ball on the tee and the hitter swings, trying to drive a line drive to the back of the cage
- The feeder replaces the ball immediately and the hitter swings again only when it is safe to do so
- The feeder counts line drives, and after a minute the pair swaps hitter and feeder
- Highest line-drive count after two minutes wins, then the next pairs rotate in
Coaching Points
- The feeder resets the ball only once the bat has stopped, which is the safety rule that makes two live bats in one cage workable
- Competition makes hitters rush, and a faster bat is not the same thing as a better swing
- Only line drives count, so hard ground balls and fly balls score nothing
