Player Assignments and Tracking
The Practice Planner lets you assign players to specific stations and tracks their participation in real time. This ensures balanced skill development and helps you spot gaps in coverage before practice even starts.
Assigning Players to Stations
How Assignment Works
Each station in your practice plan has a player dropdown where you can select which players go to that station. This works for both rotational stations (where players rotate through all stations in a block) and concurrent blocks (where players stay in one block).
Auto-Assignment Engine
The planner includes an auto-assignment engine that distributes players across stations for you:
- Position-aware matching: The engine considers player positions when making assignments. Pitchers are more likely to be assigned to pitching blocks, infielders to infield work, and so on.
- Even distribution: Players are spread as evenly as possible across stations so no station is overloaded.
Auto-assignment gives you a solid starting point. You can then manually adjust any assignments that need tweaking.
Manual Override
After auto-assignment (or instead of it), you can manually move individual players between stations by dragging them. This gives you full control over the final assignments.
Attendance
Each player has an attendance toggle in the planner. Mark players as present or absent before making assignments. Only players marked as present are included in station assignments and coverage calculations.
Coverage Reporting
The planner calculates and displays coverage metrics in real time as you build your practice and assign players.
Metrics Tracked
- Total assigned: How many players are assigned to stations vs. total roster
- Coverage percentage: What percentage of the practice each player is actively assigned to a station
- Gap detection: Identifies time periods where a player has no assignment (unassigned gaps between blocks)
- Conflict detection: Identifies overlapping assignments where a player is assigned to two stations at the same time
Visual Indicators
The planner uses color-coded indicators to surface issues at a glance:
- Green: Full coverage, no issues
- Yellow: Gaps detected (player has unassigned time periods)
- Red: Conflicts detected (player assigned to overlapping stations)
These indicators appear on the player list and on the timeline, making it easy to spot and fix problems before practice.
Player Stats Panel
The real-time player stats panel shows detailed participation data for each player:
- Time per category: How much time the player spends in each drill category (hitting, fielding, pitching, etc.)
- Drill count: Total number of drills the player is assigned to
- Coverage percentage: What portion of total practice time the player is actively engaged
- Time gaps: Specific time ranges where the player has no assignment
- Conflicts: Specific time ranges where the player has overlapping assignments
This panel updates live as you add blocks, assign players, and adjust the timeline.
Practical Usage
Building Balanced Practices
Use the coverage reporting to ensure every player gets a balanced experience:
- Build your blocks and stations
- Run auto-assignment to distribute players
- Check the stats panel for gaps or imbalances
- Manually adjust assignments to fill gaps
- Verify all players show green (full coverage, no conflicts)
Handling Uneven Numbers
When your roster does not divide evenly across stations:
- Some stations will have one more player than others
- The auto-assignment engine handles this automatically
- Check that no station is overloaded relative to the drill requirements
Position-Specific Practices
For concurrent block practices where different groups do different work:
- Create concurrent blocks (Infield Work, Outfield Work, Pitching)
- Assign infielders to the infield block, outfielders to outfield, pitchers to pitching
- The stats panel confirms each player is covered for the full block duration
- Players not assigned to a concurrent block show a gap for that time period
Late Arrivals and Early Departures
If a player arrives late or leaves early:
- Toggle their attendance off for blocks they will miss
- Coverage metrics update to reflect their reduced participation
- Assign them to the stations they can attend
Tips for Player Assignments
Start with Auto-Assignment
Let the engine do the first pass. It handles even distribution and position matching, saving you time. Then review and adjust the handful of assignments that need a human touch.
Watch for Red and Yellow
Before exporting your plan, scan the player list for any red (conflicts) or yellow (gaps) indicators. Fixing these in the planner is much easier than discovering problems mid-practice.
Use the Stats Panel for Parents
If a parent asks whether their child is getting enough time in a particular area, the stats panel provides concrete numbers. Time per category and drill count give you objective data to reference.
