Hitter's Count

A hitter's count is a ball-strike count where the batter has more balls than strikes, typically 2-0, 3-0, or 3-1. These counts favor the hitter because the pitcher needs to throw a strike to avoid walking the batter.

Why These Counts Favor the Hitter

When a pitcher needs a strike, they are forced to throw a pitch in or near the zone. This removes one of the pitcher's biggest weapons: the ability to work off the plate and get hitters to chase. In a hitter's count, the batter can:

• Look for a specific pitch: fastball in a particular location, for example, and sit on it
• Be selective: take any pitch that is not exactly what they are looking for
• Expect velocity: pitchers typically go to their best, most reliable pitch when they need a strike

The Best Hitter's Counts

3-0 is the most extreme hitter's count. The pitcher cannot afford another ball. At most levels, coaches will put on a "take" sign at 3-0 unless the hitter is extremely selective, taking a called strike to reach 3-1 is often the correct play. Some coaches give hitters the green light at 3-0 against specific pitchers or in specific game situations.

3-1 is the classic hitter's count. The pitcher needs a strike, but the hitter can still strike out. Most aggressive hitter approaches begin here, look for your pitch and attack it.

2-0 gives the pitcher a little more room (they can afford one more ball to reach 3-0), but the dynamic is similar. Look for your best pitch and be ready to hit.

Teaching Count Awareness

Count awareness is a coachable mental skill. Young hitters benefit from understanding that not all pitches are created equal, a 2-0 fastball in the middle of the zone is a different opportunity than a 0-2 slider off the corner. Teaching hitters to recognize when the pitcher is under pressure and how to capitalize on that situation is one of the most practical aspects of plate discipline education.
