Plate Appearance
Any time a batter completes their turn at the plate, regardless of outcome, includes at-bats, walks, hit by pitches, and sacrifices.
Example Usage
“He had five plate appearances, going 2-for-4 with a walk.”
Plate Appearance
A plate appearance (PA) counts every completed turn at the plate for a batter, regardless of the outcome. Unlike at-bats, plate appearances include walks, hit by pitches, and sacrifices.
What Counts as a Plate Appearance
All These Count as PA
- Hit (any type)
- Out (any type)
- Walk (base on balls)
- Hit by pitch
- Sacrifice bunt
- Sacrifice fly
- Reached on error
- Catcher's interference
The Only Exception
- At-bat interrupted (injury, weather)
- Not completed = not counted
Why Plate Appearances Matter
For Statistics
- On-Base Percentage uses PA
- OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ PA
- More accurate than batting average
For Evaluation
- PA tells you playing time
- More PA = more opportunities
- Helps compare players
PA vs. AB Comparison
| Situation | Counts as PA? | Counts as AB? |
|---|---|---|
| Single | Yes | Yes |
| Strikeout | Yes | Yes |
| Walk | Yes | No |
| Hit by pitch | Yes | No |
| Sacrifice fly | Yes | No |
Qualification Rules
MLB uses plate appearances for stats qualification:
- 3.1 PA per team game for batting title
- About 502 PA for a full season
- Ensures adequate sample size
