How to Fill Out a Lineup Card

1. Team information. Fill in your team name, opponent, date, field, and home/away designation at the top.

2. Batting order. Write each player's name and jersey number in order, starting with your leadoff hitter. For batting order strategy, see our lineup building guide.

3. Defensive positions. Write each player's starting position using abbreviations (P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF). For continuous batting order cards, fill in positions for each inning to plan rotations before the game.

4. Substitutes. List bench players with jersey numbers below the main lineup. Many leagues require all rostered players present to be listed.

5. Double-check. Verify every starter has a name, number, and position. No duplicate positions. Keep a copy for your dugout.

Why You Still Need a Physical Lineup Card

Most organized youth leagues require a written lineup card submitted to the home plate umpire before the game. The card becomes the official record for batting-out-of-order disputes.

A printed lineup taped to the dugout wall is visible to every player, assistant coach, and parent helper. For an even more visible option, consider a magnetic lineup board on the dugout fence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should a printed lineup card be?

Most umpires accept lineup cards printed on standard paper. The ideal size is roughly half a sheet of letter paper (5.5 by 8.5 inches). Our standard templates print two cards per page so you can cut them to this size.

Can I use a digital lineup card instead of a paper one?

It depends on your league. Most organized leagues require a paper card. Some rec leagues accept a digital version on a phone or tablet. Always check your league rules.

How many copies of the lineup card do I need?

At minimum, two: one for the umpire and one for your dugout. In tournament play, you may need four (add one for the opposing coach and a spare).

Do I need to list substitutes on the lineup card?

In most leagues, yes. The lineup card should include every rostered player present at the game, even if they are not starting.
