How do I keep score for a softball game?
Record the lineup in batting order with each player's name, number, and position. For each at-bat, mark the result in the diamond cell (K for strikeout, BB for walk, 1B/2B/3B/HR for hits, fielder numbers for outs). Trace the runner's path around the diamond as they advance. Tally runs, hits, errors, and left-on-base after each half-inning. Track pitching stats in the pitcher log section.
What is different about softball scorekeeping vs baseball?
Softball uses the same diamond-cell notation as baseball. The main differences: DP/FLEX substitution rules in fastpitch, no balks (illegal pitches instead), passed balls are more common in youth softball, and slowpitch often uses a 10th player (short fielder). Our softball scorekeeping sheet accommodates all these.

How many innings is a softball game?
7 innings in fastpitch (high school, college, ASA, USA Softball, USSSA). Youth leagues often play 5-6 innings. Slowpitch is 7 innings. Our 7-inning template handles regulation games; the 9-inning version is for championship play that extends beyond.
How do I track a DP/FLEX substitution on a softball scorekeeping sheet?
Mark the DP in the batting order with "DP" in the position column. Mark the FLEX in a dedicated row (usually at the bottom of the starters list) with "FLEX" and the defensive position they play. When they substitute in and out for each other, note "DP IN" / "DP OUT" with the inning. You can swap them freely without using a substitution.
What is a passed ball vs. a wild pitch in softball scoring?
A wild pitch is the pitcher's fault — the ball was so far off target the catcher could not reasonably catch it. A passed ball is the catcher's fault — the ball was catchable but she missed it. Mark "WP" on the pitcher and "PB" on the catcher in their respective logs. Both allow runners to advance; neither counts as an error.
Do I need a different scorekeeping sheet for tee ball or coach pitch softball?
At the 4-6 or 5-7 age level, full scorekeeping is overkill — use a simple stat tracker or skills assessment instead. Starting around 8U or when kid pitch begins, use the standard softball scorekeeping sheet.
