Getting Started with Dugout Edge
Everything you need to know to set up your team, manage your schedule, and plan practices.
1Set Up Your Team
Before you can generate lineups or plan practices, you need to create a team, add your players, and configure your league rules.
Creating Your Team

Steps to Create a Team:

Go to Teams
Click Teams in the navigation menu, then click New Team.

Enter Team Information
Fill in your team name, select the year, season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter), and sport type (Baseball or Softball).

Select Level and Age Group
Choose your level (Recreational, Competitive, Travel, School) and age group (T-Ball through Adult).

Add Your Players
Add each player with their name, jersey number, and position preferences. You can add up to 20+ players.

Configure League Rules
Set innings per game, field positions, and special rules like co-ed requirements or pitcher limitations.

Click Create Team
Review your settings and click the blue Create Team button to save.
Managing Your Roster
Keep your roster up to date as players join or leave, and set position preferences so the lineup generator knows where each player can play.
To Add or Edit Players:

Go to your Team Page
Click Teams in the menu, then select your team.

Click Edit Team Settings
This button is in the top right corner of your team page.

Add or Edit Players
Scroll to the roster section. For each player, enter:
- Player Name (required)
- Jersey Number (optional)
- Gender (Male, Female, or Other)
- Position Preferences - check all positions the player can play
- Batting Skill (1-5 scale) - helps balance lineup

Save Changes
Click Save Team at the bottom of the page.
Position Preferences Explained:
When you select positions for a player, you are telling the lineup generator where that player can play. The more positions selected, the more flexibility the algorithm has to create a fair lineup.
Setting Up League Rules
Configure your league rules so the lineup generator follows your league requirements automatically.
To Update League Rules:

Go to your Team Page
Click Teams then select your team.

Click the League Rules Tab
You will see your current settings displayed. To change them, click Edit Team Settings.

Adjust Your Settings
Scroll to the League Rules section and modify as needed.
Available Settings:
Innings per Game
How many innings your games typically last (default: 6).
Defensive Positions
Choose which positions to fill each inning. Presets available:
- Standard 9 - P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF
- Standard 10 - Adds extra outfielder (LCF or RCF)
- Coach Pitch - No pitcher position (coach pitches)
All Players Bat
Toggle ON if everyone bats (common in youth leagues). Toggle OFF and set a batting order size if only some players bat.
Co-Ed League Settings
If enabled, you can set:
- Minimum Female Players required on the field
- Gender Batting Order Rule to alternate genders in the lineup
Pitcher Rules
Set Pitcher Cannot Return if a pitcher who leaves the mound cannot pitch again. Set Max Innings Pitched to limit pitcher usage.

Manage your season by adding games and practices to your schedule. Generate lineups for games and create structured practice plans.
Games & Lineups
Add games to your schedule and generate fair lineups with batting orders and position assignments for each inning.

Creating a Game:

Go to your Team Page
Click Teams then select your team, and click the Schedule tab.

Click Create Game
The button is in the top right of the Schedule section.

Enter Game Details
- Opponent Name - Who you are playing
- Game Date - When the game is
- Game Time - Start time
- Location - Where the game is played

Save the Game
Click Create Game. You can now generate a lineup for this game.
Generating a Lineup:

Open the Lineup Generator
Click Lineup Generator in the menu, or click Generate Lineup from a game on your Schedule.

Select Your Team and Game
Choose your team and enter/select the game details. You can override innings or positions for this specific game.

Review Your Roster
Make sure all players who will attend are checked. Uncheck anyone who will be absent.

Click Generate Lineup
The algorithm will create a batting order and assign positions for each inning.

Review, Edit, and Export
You can manually swap positions or reorder batters. Click Export PDF to download a printable lineup card.
Viewing & Editing a Game:
- Go to Teams → select your team → Schedule tab
- Click on any game to view its details and lineup
- Click Edit Game to change the date, time, opponent, or location
- Click Edit Lineup to modify positions or batting order, or Regenerate to create a new lineup
How the Fairness Algorithm Works:
- Playing Time: Distributes innings evenly so no player sits too much
- Position Variety: Rotates players through different positions
- Preferences: Respects position preferences while maintaining fairness
- Batting Order: Balances skill levels throughout the order
Practices
Use the Practice Planner to build structured practices with drills from our library of 100+ activities.
Creating a Practice Plan:

Go to Practice Planner
Click Practice Planner in the menu.

Select Your Team
Choose which team this practice is for.

Set Practice Details
- Date - When the practice is
- Duration - Total practice time (60, 90, 120 min)
- Focus Areas - What skills to work on (Hitting, Fielding, etc.)

Build Your Timeline
Add blocks for each activity: Warmup, Hitting, Infield, Outfield, Team Defense, Cool Down. Set duration for each block.

Add Drills to Each Block
Search our drill library or let AI suggest drills based on your focus areas. Each drill shows setup instructions and coaching points.

Save and Export
Click Save Practice Plan to store it. Export as PDF to bring to the field.
Viewing & Editing a Practice:
- Go to Teams → select your team → Schedule tab
- Click on any practice to view its plan and drills
- Click Edit Practice to modify the plan, add or remove drills, or change times
- You can also access saved practices from the Practice Planner page
