Hitting Drill: Top Hand Bottom Hand Tee Work (Baseball & Softball)
One-handed tee drill using only bottom hand to develop proper hand path, extension, and bottom-hand strength.
How to Run This Drill
- Tee set up slightly in front of the middle of the plate
- Hitter sets up even with the plate, while other partner puts a ball on the tee
- Hitter gets ready, hold bat with the hand closest to the knob of the bat (bottom hand)
- Hitter places other hand (top hand) across chest on front shoulder to keep shoulder closed
- Swinging with one hand, the hitter tries to hit the ball on a line back up the middle - holding abbreviated follow through to encourage feel and not rolling over.
- Repeat the same process with the top hand.
- If the bat is too heavy to control with one hand, the hitter may slide their hand up on the bat or use a small sized bat.
- Partners switch after 5 swings each hand.
- A short 28” bat can also be used for this drill
Coaching Points
- Non swinging hand on opposite shoulder
- Top/Bottom hand drives through the ball emphasizing hands through the ball
- May choke up if bat is too heavy
- Hit ball on a line up the middle
- Develops top/bottom hand strength and path individually
- Can use shorter/lighter bat if needed
