Infield Drill: Tag and Flip (Baseball & Softball)

Practice the complete tag play sequence: receive throw, apply tag, immediately flip to the next base. Develops quick hands and transitions.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Set up middle infielders at second base with a coach or player at first base.
  2. First baseman throws to the shortstop or second baseman covering the bag.
  3. Fielder receives the throw and applies a quick tag to an imaginary runner.
  4. Immediately after the tag, fielder flips the ball to the other middle infielder or back to first.
  5. Focus on keeping the glove low for the tag, then a quick wrist flip for the short throw.
  6. Rotate through so all infielders get reps at both receiving and flipping.

  • Use a quick wrist flip for short throws - no arm swing needed
