Infield Drill: Tag and Flip (Baseball & Softball)
Practice the complete tag play sequence: receive throw, apply tag, immediately flip to the next base. Develops quick hands and transitions.
How to Run This Drill
- Set up middle infielders at second base with a coach or player at first base.
- First baseman throws to the shortstop or second baseman covering the bag.
- Fielder receives the throw and applies a quick tag to an imaginary runner.
- Immediately after the tag, fielder flips the ball to the other middle infielder or back to first.
- Focus on keeping the glove low for the tag, then a quick wrist flip for the short throw.
- Rotate through so all infielders get reps at both receiving and flipping.
Coaching Points
- Keep glove low for tag application - dont swipe high
- Use a quick wrist flip for short throws - no arm swing needed
- Stay balanced during the tag and throw sequence
- Communicate with teammates on timing
- Practice both forehand and backhand tags
- Secure the ball during the transfer
