Fielding Drill: 21 Outs Game (Baseball & Softball)

The 21 Outs Game is a defensive challenge that tests a team's focus, communication, and consistency. The goal is to record 21 consecutive outs without a mistake. Any error — physical or mental — resets the count to zero. It's a fun, high-pressure way to simulate real-game defense and build team accountability.

Instructions

1. Coach or fungo hitter puts a ball in play to different positions. 2. Fielders must make the proper defensive play and record an out. 3. Each clean play = 1 out. 4. Any error or missed assignment resets the count back to 0. 5. Continue until the team successfully records 21 consecutive outs. 6. Optionally, add a time limit, competition between groups, or a reward if the team reaches 21.

Coaching Points

  • Focus every pitch: Treat each rep like a live game situation.
  • Communication: Players should call the ball early and often.
  • Anticipation: Know the situation before the ball is hit — where's the next play?
  • Energy and chatter: Keep the team engaged and vocal throughout.
  • Fundamentals: Emphasize good footwork, glove presentation, and throwing accuracy.
  • Back each other up: Teach awareness and responsibility across positions.
  • Positive pressure: Celebrate small streaks (5 outs, 10 outs, etc.) to build momentum.
  • Reset mindset: If the team makes an error, immediately regroup and refocus — "next pitch" mentality.
  • Coach tempo: Keep balls coming quickly to simulate game pace and rhythm.
