Outfield Drill: 8 Ball Softball Outfield Drill (Softball)
Outfield agility drill where players field balls hit to 8 different spots around them. Great for building range and reaction time.
How to Run This Drill
- Set up a box area in the outfield using cones or markers. Size the box based on player skill level - smaller for advanced, larger for beginners.
- Coach stands in one location with a bucket of balls.
- Hit or throw the first ball to a spot in front of the player. Player fields it cleanly and returns it.
- Continue hitting to different spots: behind, left, right, diagonal corners - 8 total locations around the player.
- Player must move quickly to each ball, use proper footwork, and make clean plays.
- After completing all 8 balls, rotate to the next player. Keep track of successful plays for competition.
Coaching Points
- Emphasize taking care of the ball - make clean catches
- Move your feet to get your body in front of the ball
- Make it competitive by timing players or counting successes
- Adjust box size to match player ability
- Great for building outfield range and confidence
