Infield Drill: Groundball Quick Catch (Baseball & Softball)
Fast-paced drill emphasizing clean catches over flashy plays. Partner rolls ground balls at varying speeds and angles.
How to Run This Drill
- Partners face each other about 15-20 feet apart in athletic fielding position.
- One partner rolls ground balls at varying speeds - some slow rollers, some hard shots.
- Fielder focuses on catching the ball cleanly with two hands, securing it immediately.
- After each catch, fielder quickly tosses the ball back and gets ready for the next one.
- Vary the angles - roll some to the forehand, some to the backhand, some directly at the fielder.
- Complete 20-30 reps, then switch roles. Keep the pace quick but prioritize clean fielding.
Coaching Points
- Use two hands whenever possible
- Keep glove low and open to the ball
- Watch the ball all the way into your glove
- Secure the ball quickly after the catch
- Stay balanced and ready for the next ball
