Infield Drill: Groundball Competition (Baseball & Softball)
Team competition where groups compete fielding ground balls and making accurate throws. Develops fundamentals under pressure.
How to Run This Drill
- Divide players into two or three teams of 3-4 players each.
- Each team lines up behind a cone. Coach hits ground balls to one player at a time, rotating between teams.
- Player fields the ground ball and throws to a designated target (first baseman or bucket).
- Award 1 point for a clean field, 1 point for an accurate throw. Deduct 1 point for errors.
- Rotate through all players on each team, keeping a running score.
- Add challenges: throw from your knees, backhand only, charge and throw on the run.
Coaching Points
- Focus on proper fielding position even under competition pressure
- Clean fielding is more important than speed
- Encourage teammates to cheer for each other
- Throws should be chest-high to the target
- Stay ready in athletic position while waiting
- Celebrate good effort, not just results
