Infield Drill: Groundball Competition (Baseball & Softball)

Team competition where groups compete fielding ground balls and making accurate throws. Develops fundamentals under pressure.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Divide players into two or three teams of 3-4 players each.
  2. Each team lines up behind a cone. Coach hits ground balls to one player at a time, rotating between teams.
  3. Player fields the ground ball and throws to a designated target (first baseman or bucket).
  4. Award 1 point for a clean field, 1 point for an accurate throw. Deduct 1 point for errors.
  5. Rotate through all players on each team, keeping a running score.
  6. Add challenges: throw from your knees, backhand only, charge and throw on the run.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on proper fielding position even under competition pressure
  • Clean fielding is more important than speed
  • Encourage teammates to cheer for each other
  • Throws should be chest-high to the target
  • Stay ready in athletic position while waiting
  • Celebrate good effort, not just results
