Team Defense Drill: Bunt Defense Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Full team drill practicing bunt coverage and defensive assignments. Cover sacrifice bunts, squeeze plays, and different bunt locations.
How to Run This Drill
- Set up full infield defense with a runner at first base. Coach bunts from home plate.
- Before each bunt, call out the coverage responsibilities so everyone knows their assignment.
- Situation 1 - Sacrifice bunt: Practice both first and third charging, with middle infielders covering bases.
- Situation 2 - Bunt up the middle: Pitcher and catcher must communicate on who fields it.
- Situation 3 - Squeeze play: Defense must get the out at home plate.
- After each play, discuss what went right and wrong. Rotate runners and fielders regularly.
Coaching Points
- Call out coverage before every bunt
- Communication between pitcher and catcher is critical
- Know the situation - sometimes take the out at first, sometimes go home
- First and third basemen must charge aggressively
- Practice all variations of bunt defense
