Hitting Drill: Beginner Bunting Fundamentals (Baseball & Softball)
Introduction to bunting mechanics for beginners. Focus on stance, grip, and catching the ball with the bat rather than swinging.

How to Run This Drill
- Start with proper bunting stance: pivot to face the pitcher with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width.
- Show the proper grip: bottom hand stays in normal position, top hand slides up the barrel to the trademark area.
- Hold the bat at the top of the strike zone. Bend knees to bunt lower pitches rather than lowering the bat.
- Practice catching the ball with the bat - let the ball come to you rather than pushing at it.
- Once the basics are solid, work on angling the bat to direct the ball down the first or third base line.
- Stress that bunting is catching the ball with the bat and placing it - not swinging.
Coaching Points
- Square to the pitcher with feet apart
- Top hand slides up to the barrel - fingers behind the bat
- Hold bat at top of zone, bend knees for low pitches
- Catch the ball with the bat - dont push or swing
