Hitting Drill: Bat Behind Hips (Baseball & Softball)
Tee drill where bat is placed behind the back to isolate and develop proper hip rotation in the swing.

How to Run This Drill
- Tee set up in front of the middle of the plate at the height of the bat once placed behind hips
- Hitter sets up even with the plate, while partner places a ball on the tee
- Hitter puts the bat behind their back, resting right above their hips with the barrel of the bat off of their back hip and hooks their arms around the bat
- Hitter hits the ball off the tee by firing with the hips and having the hips control the bat to the ball
- Partners switch after 10 swings
Coaching Points
- Bat rests right above hips, barrel off back hip
- Fire the hips to drive the bat to ball and encourage proper rotation of hips
- Hips control the bat, not arms
- Feel hip rotation powering the swing
- For hitters who are too handsy
- Power comes from the ground up through hips
