Baserunning Drill: Base Running Circuit (Baseball)
A comprehensive baserunning station drill that teaches players how to run out of the batter's box, run through first base correctly, and take the proper angle for extra bases.
Instructions
Set up a complete baserunning circuit with home plate, first base, and markers for the running lane. Divide players into groups and rotate through the station. Start at home plate and simulate swinging at a pitch. Immediately sprint out of the batter's box using a crossover step. Run in a straight line down the baseline toward first base. Touch the front of first base and run through it without slowing down. For practicing turns, set up a cone 10-15 feet before first base. When approaching this cone, begin angling toward the outfield to take the turn properly. Touch the inside corner of first base and continue toward second base.
Coaching Points
- Teach the proper crossover step out of the batter's box for a quick start
- Emphasize running in a straight line - don't drift toward foul territory
- Players should accelerate through first base, not slow down before it
- For turns, start the angle early and hit the inside corner of the base
